Nations Are Not Born. They're Earned. In 2125 every country on Earth has merged into one of three super nations. They are locked in a bitter cold war dispute over energy rationing. On the verge of another world war, every major religion rose up in defense of peace. They formed an organization known as the Council, and brokered a shaky treaty that stands to this day. To ease the resource drain, they brought all three nations together in an unprecedented form to collectively share in the costs of mining helium-3 on the lunar surface. Also known as H-3, the resource is a clean burning, non-radioactive helium isotope. It is now the only viable form of energy left on Earth and in space. To support the mining effort, five cities developed on the lunar surface and their combined population is now well over three million. The original colonists were volunteers, adventurers, scientists, and philosophers. Individuals that sought out a new world filled with opportunities and hope. Unfortunately, the peace between the Three Nations did not last. Fear, distrust and malcontent around the H-3 distributions spread. Freedom of speech, religion, immigration and scientific liberties were quietly reduced and then taken away altogether, under the guise of increased security and isolationism. Free of the need to compete for limited resources and coupled with the tightening restrictions, the colonists slowly separated themselves from the nations of Earth. This began a downward spiral between the colonists who risked violence and retribution to push for eroding freedoms and the Council that was forced to maintain the peace and the precious supply of helium-3. Facing increased pressure on all sides, the Council created a military school referred to only as the Island. The purpose was to train soldiers from childhood in order to build the most elite fighting force on Earth. Their goals were to conduct impossible missions, lead the Council’s military, defend the Three Nations’ peace treaty and maintain order among the lunar colonies. The most advanced students were drafted into an elite program. The precious few in the outside world who know of their existence refer to them with trepidation as the Angele Dei. Alden Connor is the most gifted soldier in the program. Events that were planned out decades before he was born have begun to fall into place. The Council, the Angele Dei, the lunar colonists and the Three Nations of Earth will all play their parts, but the outcome will rest solely on Alden’s shoulders and the decisions he will be forced to make. Humanity is slowly marching towards its Last Revolution, from which none will escape.

This is a fairly average, possibly three star, "oppressed colonists rebelling against an evil homeworld government" story. The story itself is reasonably interesting and it is the kind of story I like. The problem with the book is that it has all the signs of having been written by a high school student who struggles to maintain a C average in English, such as using the word "formerly" when he meant "formally," "disposed" when he meant "deposed", "diffuse" when he meant "defuse", and, most hilariously, "yolk" when he meant "yoke". The transitions between flashbacks and the book's "present" are handled very awkwardly. There are awkward and confusing sentences such as one apparently referring to a third person in a scene in which there are only two people present. There are also many errors which appear to be merely typos.

The book ends on a bit of cliffhanger, which I normally don't mind too much as long as it doesn't turn out to be a long series of books each ending on a cliffhanger. I might read the next book just to see what happens next. I suppose it would be too much to ask that the author work on his grammar and vocabulary skills before publishing this next book.

The Last Revolution RT Carpenter 9780989834117 Books Reviews

This was an entertaining story in that it portrayed another possible future of mankind. This future involved to many different scenarios for me to plot clearly.
As a local resident of the Bristol Bay area, once I heard about this book's existence, I told myself that I had to read it - not because it was possibly a good read, but because the author is from the same part of the world as myself. As it turns out, he's a good writer too.

The Last Revolution is captivating in that it invites you to the possibility of what the future might hold - scientifically, economically and personally. Alden, the main character of the book is well characterized as someone who wants what is best for everyone - on Earth or otherwise. Like all people, he is also riddled with his own inner turmoil. R.T. Carpenter possesses a writing style that is easy to visualize as you are reading - a feat that makes it hard for the reader to put the book down. What I also like is that as you read, Carpenter tosses you a piece of a puzzle, but doesn't tell you until later where that piece is supposed to go or how it fits with other pieces. It is a well-written novel and I would recommend it to anyone.
I liked this story and I read a lot in this genre. I hope there is a lot more from this author and i intend to read it all. The story rings true of human nature and political power.
The concept was very interesting and the main characters were each quite different from each other and all very real. A lot of cliff hanger type action. Several good people get killed along the way making the story more powerful. Look forward to reading more of Carpenter's books if any, this one was great.
Overall the book was okay...Alden experienced a lot not knowing his parents, close friends dying and trust issues! I will still check out the book but I was kind of confuse w/ Gabriel being called Arakiel and who was controlling his moves and etc.
Great book! Really liked the story. Author did an awesome job of keeping it fast paced, with plenty of unexpected curveballs.
This was a great story. It takes you to a time and place that could exist in the future. It has new technology ideas such as use of helium 3 as the new energy source, wrist decks and holographic communications. In this world, the weather can be controlled! The action scenes are so well described that you read through it like you are watching a movie. The author also spent time creating the characters, showing that in the post-apocalyptic world, human connections are still central in the universe.
